How a walk in nature can make you healthier

Walking in nature can have incredible health benefits, according to studies.  These are just some of the powerful benefits of making walks in nature a part of your routine:

  • Improvement in memory and attention
  • Increase in physical and mental energy
  • Greater sense of well-being
  • Speedier health recovery (studies have shown that patients in hospitals recover more quickly when they can see trees from their windows)
  • Stress reduction
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower heart rate
  • Improvement in immune function

The key benefit of nature is nurturing something called mindfulness - when you're away from people and the things they've created, your brain turns off its multi-tasking feature and instead focuses on the sights, sounds, and smells that surround you.

Mindfulness has been proven to have psychological benefits, and it's the cornerstone of many therapies and psychological exercises.

Here’s a great article on mindfulness and how you can start practicing it starting today.

Even simple, non-exercise activities like reading or sun-bathing-- or what the Japanese would call “forest-bathing--” may have similar positive effects!
