Choose the direction of your life
/A few years ago, I did a very powerful exercise that I would like to share with you. I know you will find it as valuable as I did. It is a wake-up call on actively choosing the direction of our lives today, without waiting another second. Here’s how it goes:
- The first part of the exercise asks you to visualize your funeral (incredibly morbid I know, but hey, it’s inevitable). Imagine what the people attending would say about you in their conversations with each other while they are gathered. Hear their comments, their conversations, their statements….Go ahead and take a few minutes to write this down…It’s important to write it down, so don’t just do it in your head. Pick up a pen and write it down right now (or type it in your phone) before you read the next part of the exercise.
- The second part of the exercise asks for you to write down what you want people to say about you. Some of what you heard in part #1 may have been a bit disappointing. Someone could have said “She was always in such a rush”…or…”He always seemed anxious about the future”….or “…Always worried about something…” This is your opportunity to write down what you really want your life to be about and what you would want people to say about you.
- Look back at part 1 and part 2. What do the gaps tell you? When I did this, and was completely honest, I remembered there being a gap around how hard I can be on myself at times. I know this and those around me that love me most know this too. It was a wake-up call to stop being so self-critical…because life is too short.
What is amazing about this exercise is that it points you to where you would like to make different choices. It shows you where you would like to choose a different direction for your life. Imagine that you could live your life free of worries and fears. What would be that life? What would you be remembered for? What would you be dedicating your time to? Your energy?
Start here, today.
Lots of love,
Judith
